Goals and principles

Project principles

A shared framework for smartphone-safe environments, responsible learning, and continuous improvement across partner schools.

Overview

Why principles matter

FOCUS starts from a simple premise: schools need a clear and shared language for smartphone use. Rules alone are not enough. Students also need routines, reflection, and supported practice.

These principles help partners design age-appropriate approaches for primary and secondary education while keeping learning, wellbeing, and self-regulation in view.

Framework

The three areas

Smartphone-safe environment

Create predictable school routines that reduce distraction and make expectations visible to students, teachers, and families.

Responsible smartphone learning

Use smartphones only where they clearly support learning goals, reflection, or structured digital competence.

Continuous improvement

Test practices, gather feedback, and improve implementation through partner exchange and school-level reflection.

What this page can become

This is the starting version. Later we can add downloadable materials, partner examples, classroom activities, policy templates, or separate pages for each principle.
